Diversity Statement

Clients increasingly recognize Potter Anderson & Corroon's leadership role in improving diversity in the legal profession in Delaware.  Thomas L. Sager, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel for DuPont (an important firm client), has seen first hand the firm’s commitment to diversity.  In his words, “The lawyers at Potter Anderson & Corroon believe that improving diversity in the legal profession is not only a business imperative, it’s the right thing to do.  DuPont is proud to be represented by a firm like Potter Anderson, whose lawyers are truly committed to making the legal profession more diverse.”

Potter Anderson & Corroon believes that to provide “best in class” service to our clients, our lawyers and staff must reflect a broad spectrum of cultures, races and ethnicities.  A leader among Delaware firms in promoting women in the legal profession since 1923, when one of the first two women admitted to the practice of law in Delaware was hired by the firm, Potter Anderson & Corroon now has the highest percentage of women partners among all large Delaware firms.  Two of the firm’s five Executive Committee members are women, as are the leaders of several of the firm’s practice areas and the chairs of several firm committees.

The firm’s commitment to diversity does not end with its unparalleled record of encouraging and promoting women to leadership positions.  The firm is equally committed to recruiting and promoting lawyers of color.  The firm continually seeks opportunities to attract a racially and ethnically diverse pool of candidates. For example, the firm has organized and hosted receptions for minority students at regional law schools to provide the students the opportunity to learn more about Potter Anderson & Corroon and the Delaware legal market in general. The firm has also actively participated in the Delaware Minority Job Fair for 1st and 2nd year law students since its inception in the early 1990's, and is the host of the DuPont Minority Job Fair (open to Potter Anderson & Corroon and the 37 other firms that participate in the DuPont Legal Model).  In addition, the firm played a key role in the establishment of the Delaware Minority Supplemental Bar Review Course, now run by the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section of the Delaware State Bar Association, and has been a leader in efforts to recruit minority law students to Delaware.

Indeed, others recognize the firm’s lawyers as leaders in diversity.  In May 2006, the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section awarded its 2006 Leadership Award to Potter Anderson & Corroon associate Terri Brown-Edwards, and its 2006 Community Service Award to Potter Anderson & Corroon partner Joshua W. Martin, III and his wife, Cynthia Primo Martin.

The firm’s Diversity Committee focuses and coordinates our diversity efforts.  The Diversity Committee is chaired by Joshua W. Martin, III, and includes the chair of the firm’s Executive Committee, David Brown; immediate past chair of the firm’s Executive Committee, Michael Goldman; chair of the firm’s Business Development Committee, Richard Horwitz; former Executive Committee member and Associate Committee chair, Kathleen Furey McDonough; chair of the firm’s Associate Committee, Peter Walsh; and chair of the firm’s Recruiting Committee, Eric Feldman.  Other Diversity Committee members include partners Janine Salomone and Theresa Brown-Edwards, and associates Jai Lee, Roxanne Houtman and Rakesh Mehta.  The Diversity Committee monitors the firm’s diversity activities and makes recommendations in order to ensure that a diverse working environment within the firm is fostered and sustained.

Charles McDowell, who is of counsel to the firm, joined the Board of Trustees of Delaware State University, an historically black university located in Dover, Delaware.

Recently, members of the firm's Diversity Committee spoke out about diversity in the practice of law . . .
